Tagging Guidelines

TAGGING: Preparing, entering, and attaching tags to the items you want to sell at My Mommy Mart.

As a consignor, you are responsible for hanging & tagging your own items. You will use our online software to describe the items and price them. YOU decide on the price. YOU decide if you want to discount on the last day (we highly recommend it), and YOU decide if you want to return to pick up any leftover items or if you prefer, we send them to local charities. Your tags will need to be printed and attached to your items. We have guidelines on how to best attach those tags and how to group items.

Remember how I keep saying that you should read the Consignor Booklet? Most of the information and updates you need are in that thing.

SUPPLIES

Let’s begin at the beginning.

You are going to need some supplies to get started tagging your items. This is not a full list of items but instead, a starting point to get your brain in gear. Depending on the items you are consigning, you may not need some of the items on this list. You may need more supplies than those listed here, like batteries for any items that require batteries.

If your item has more than one piece, consider attaching a piece of painters tape with your Consignor Number and Item Number to the smaller pieces. Only print one barcode for the piece.〰️If your item has more than one piece, consider attaching a piece of painters tape with your Consignor Number and Item Number to the smaller pieces. PREP

Prep is the key to consigning. Some moms do all the prep leading up to the sale and finally enter their items in the last 24 hours. I’ll fully admit that I’m that person. However, if it is your first or second time consigning, I highly suggest starting earlier.

Review the Consignor Booklet I emailed to you when you registered to consign. I included the common abbreviations we use and that will give you more space in your tagging description.

Make sure your stuff is clean, that you print your tags on cardstock, and you have reviewed the tagging guidelines, and you will be set!

Large Items - You will attach your tag with the barcode to a Large Item Claim Ticket. You can pick up your tickets before the event or fill them out at the event. For more information about what is considered a “large item,” see the Large Item Claim Ticket page.

SHOES

See this chaos? This is why shoes have their own section here. Each sale, our consignors bring in more than 5,000 pairs of shoes. I could write pages just about shoes, especially what not to bring. You will see those items in future emails.

  • There is a limit of 15 pair of shoes per gender/per consignor.

  • Please bring only shoes in like-new, used condition. NOT good enough for play shoes condition. No thank you!

  • Shoes should be attached together by string, zip-ties, or whatever it takes to keep them from getting separated. Item tags should be attached directly to the shoes.

  • Use very detailed descriptions. Shoes ALWAYS get separated from tags due to having to shop them from laundry baskets. Good descriptions help us match up a missing tag to the correct shoes. (I was the person doing most of this last sale and I know I matched at least 10 pair with their missing tags) This is a great time to use painters tape with your consignor & item number on the inside of the shoe bottom.

CLOTHING

Clothing gets it’s own little tagging section because it is what we have consigned the most. Just know that you definitely want to price competitively with clothing because there is just so much.

The guidelines as far as what we are accepting at the upcoming event is located in your Consignor Booklet and on this website. Review it every time you consign so you aren’t surprised by any changes. Make sure you know the items we have limited, or do not accept.

What can you sell? Clothing from Infant sizes up to Children's 14, Children's Shoes, Toys, Baby Equipment, Children's Books & Movies, Outdoor Play Equipment, Nursery Furniture, Costumes, Sports Equipment, Dance, and Accessories

Clothing items we do not accept: Out of Season Items: For Spring - No heavy coats, snowsuits, fleece, heavy boots, or Halloween/Christmas items. For Fall - No shorts, swimsuits, sandals, summer, or Easter Items

We never accept: Clothing above children’s size 14, juniors, women’s, & men’s sizes. Out of date clothing - clothing over than 5 years old. Shoes that only adults would wear. Dirty, damaged, stained, smelly, or too well-worn items. Recalled items

P.S. We do not take maternity and won’t be anytime soon. Throughout the years, when we had it for sale, it just didn’t sell more than 30% of the inventory, took up a lot of space, and fell off the hangers.

Sporting Gear, Dance, and Gymnastics Apparel - Keep in mind that items always sell best within their season! We will accept sporting gear and dance apparel for all seasons - except for snow sports. I know that sports items get stained - especially those white baseball pants. Make sure the items aren’t overly worn, and clean the equipment, especially those cleats, before you come in.

BOOKS

Packaging: Use painters tape to attach tags, not shipping tape. DO NOT USE PACKING TAPE ON BOOKS. You and I both know that is going to ruin the cover.

Book Condition: Books should be in good to excellent condition, with no tears or excessive writing. If there’s minor writing, note it on the tag.

Tag Limit: You can submit up to 30 book tags. Group books by age category to make them appealing as a set, even if they are from different series or authors.

Tag Description: Avoid general terms like “books”; be specific, such as “4 Dr. Seuss books – Cat in the Hat, Lorax, etc.” for better organization at checkout.

Book Grouping Ideas: Wrap books with yarn like a gift. Use gallon Ziplock bags with visible titles. List book titles on the front of the stack.

TOYS, GAMES, AND PUZZLES

I hate when I get messages from buyers about items they purchased at My Mommy Mart missing pieces. Usually, those items fall in this category. It is why we no longer take puzzles with lots of pieces. Of course, the buyers are upset when they are putting together a puzzle, only to discover that it is missing pieces.

Toys - Toys should be in giftable condition. Any accessories should be placed in ziploc bags and attached to the larger item (again, a secondary painter’s tape tag is nice here). Items containing small parts may be placed in a heavy Ziploc bag and attached to the item. Bags should be sealed shut before being placed on the sales floor. If items are electronic and need to be checked, do not tape the bags until after inspection.

Games - Make sure all the pieces are in the box before you sell the game.

  • Puzzles - The only puzzles we accept are the ones where we can visually see every piece is there.

  • Bedding and Decor - We no longer accept bedding sets (They just don’t sell and take up a ton of space). Items should be kid-themed and nothing over toddler bed size. We have some blankets in bags, and we have some blankets that are on hangers. We prefer hangers for larger blankets so the customers can see what they are buying. We only accept decor that is suitable for a younger child’s room.

  • Furniture and Baby Equipment - Items should be assembled so the buyer can see what they are buying. Items in boxes never sell as well as items on display. Clean the items before you bring them. This means cleaning the seats, trays, and straps. We will not accept dirty items. If items need batteries to function, make sure the items have functioning batteries. Consignors should be sure their items have not been part of a recall. You can visit the Consumer Product Safety Commission website to check for any recalls.

  • Socks, Hats, Hairbows, and other Accessories - Each consignor can put in up to 30 accessories due to lack of space and sell through. Group similar items together and place in a ziploc bag. Make sure the items are worth at least $2. Do not put a bunch of random things/sizes in a bag and attempt to sell them. Put a good description of the items on the tag. An example of a good description is “8 pair Old Navy 2T Socks”. A bad description would be “socks”. Just don’t.

  • Bibs, Bottles, and Other Small Baby Items - Small items should be grouped together with other similar items and placed in a heavy plastic bag (like a Ziploc bag). Before you seal these items in the bag, let our inspectors look through the items. We will have tape at drop-off so the bags can be sealed shut.
